This statistical reference illustrated by diagrams, based on the data from RF Goskomstat, was prepared by RCSME in order to asses the size and latest developments in the SME sector.

In recent nine years the legislative basis, which regulates entrepreneurial activity, particularly, small business, has been created. The goals and objectives of the governmental policy towards small business support have been identified. Mechanisms for implementing the support measures have been developed; organizations, which can perform them, have been created. A network of business support organizations, which provide assistance to SMEs in training, information support, consulting, financial assistance has been established.

The attained level of small business development is vividly manifested in the statistical data on SMEs in Russia.
The paper shows positive changes in the basic SME indicators: total number of SMEs, number of SMEs by regions, employment, number of SMEs per 1000 of population, SMEs share in the total number of enterprises, number of individual entrepreneurs and farms.
